CF Otago chairman Julian Cox said more than 500 people watched the bubble-making at the Anzac Square gardens.
Onlookers were surprised and delighted at the display.
''There were lots of smiles and the occasional `Wow','' Mr Cox said.
More than 100 people also took the chance to make their own bubbles - some up to 2m across - during the four-hour Saturday morning event.
The event previewed national ''bubbles week'', which starts today, and CF Otago's annual fundraising collection, which takes place on Friday and Saturday.
''It's a great lead-in and I'm very pleased with how it's gone,'' he said.
Mr Cox's daughter, Rachael (14), who has cystic fibrosis, said the Dunedin event had raised community awareness about the inherited lung disorder.
She enjoyed generally good health, but the sad reality was that some people with CF were so severely affected they could not blow any bubbles themselves.
