Time, not money

A 7-year-old with their own cheque book is probably not a good idea - unless it is one issued by the bank of Big Value Christmas.

Children did not seem to find it difficult to meet the criteria for cheque books of chores.

All they had to do was colour in the front page and staple it together.

Hundreds of children were issued with the currency medium, each page of which offered parents payments and services such as room cleanings, washing dishes, helping with dinner, vacuuming the car, long big hugs ... even foot rubs.

Unlike real cheques, these ones are negotiable.

It was one of many ideas on display at the Big Value Christmas event in the Lower Octagon and at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on Saturday.

The event celebrated Money Week and aimed to help Dunedin families plan for the approaching Christmas season.

As well as fun activities for children to participate in, there were workshops for them to learn how to make Christmas decorations and Christmas treats, and many other smart ways to have a safe and fun Christmas that benefits the entire community.
