Railway involved in filming as Hollywood comes to town

The cameras are rolling as Hollywood hits Dunedin, and the Taieri Gorge Railway could be an early star.

Filming of The Light Between Oceans, starring Rachel Weisz and Michael Fassbender, is understood to have begun in the city on Saturday.

A charter jet containing unknown occupants flew into Dunedin International Airport on Friday, and the film crew was quickly into its work at the weekend.

Taieri Gorge Railway chief executive Murray Bond confirmed his company was involved in weekend shooting, but could not divulge details.

''We were involved. I can say that much.''

Operations manager Grant Craig would only say the railway's part in filming had been completed, but referred other questions to the film's production staff.

''I'm not sure we're allowed to say too much about it.

''They're still filming in Dunedin. We've finished our filming, but that's about all I can say.''

It also appeared the vintage steam locomotive Ja1240, named Jessica, was part of Saturday's filming.

The locomotive, which is in Dunedin for Labour Weekend steam excursions, was pictured on the Taieri Gorge Railway Facebook page doing ''filming'' work in Palmerston on Saturday.

The film's supervising location manager, Jared Connon, had said last week some of Dunedin's ''iconic'' sights would be instantly recognisable in the film.

That included Fletcher House and nearby Clearwater St, in Broad Bay, Portobello Rd, Highcliff Rd and George St in Port Chalmers, and an office in the Allied Press building in Lower Stuart St. Allied Press owns the Otago Daily Times.

Contacted yesterday, Mr Connon referred ODT questions to the film's publicist, Louise Spencer, who could not be contacted.

The film, based on the book by Australian writer M. L. Stedman, is set in the 1920s, and tells the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife, who live on a remote island off Western Australia.
