It's been called the Toaster and the Glasshouse.

But Forsyth Barr Stadium will temporarily become the House of God this weekend, as hundreds of Dunedin residents gather for a combined Catholic Mass.

The Mass on Sunday will be part of Kavanagh College's 25th jubilee celebrations and will attract all schools and parishes in the city.

Kavanagh College principal Tracy O'Brien said the primary schools and parishes had been a significant part of Kavanagh College's history, so it was important to include them in the celebrations.

''The idea was for it to be a full community celebration.

''We thought a Mass at the stadium would be unique.

''Just being under the roof will be novel and something to remember. We're not likely to do something like this again for some time.''

Mr O'Brien said as well as the usual school tours, photos and classmate gatherings associated with jubilee celebrations, a bronze plaque would be laid at Kavanagh College to commemorate the three founding orders of the school.

Schools from the Dominican Sisters, Sisters of Mercy and Christian Brothers were merged 25 years ago to form Kavanagh College, and the plaque was a fitting tribute, he said.

The college was named after the late Bishop John Patrick Kavanagh (1913-85), who was the fourth Catholic Bishop of Dunedin (1949-85), and a key figure in Catholic education for more than 25 years.

Mr O'Brien said the jubilee organisers were delighted Bishop Kavanagh's nephew, John Kavanagh jun, would attend the celebrations as a representative of the Kavanagh family.

Mr Kavanagh will speak at a lunch during the celebrations.
