Dunedin's No.7 Balmac is proving to be a star magnet, with Michael Fassbender the latest Hollywood A-lister to dine there.

Fassbender was seen having lunch at the Maori Hill restaurant on Sunday, following in the footsteps of The Light Between Oceans co-star Rachel Weisz and her husband and James Bond star, Daniel Craig.

A Dunedin woman who posed for a picture with Fassbender at the restaurant said he was friendly, but she declined to be named or share the picture with the Otago Daily Times.

''I knew who he was instantly.''

Despite dishing on Craig and Weisz's visit a week earlier, the restaurant was keeping quiet about its latest celebrity diner, a staff member saying: ''We are not willing to comment.''

Fassbender, perhaps best known as the villain Magneto in the two most recent X-Men films, was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as a slave owner in 12 Years a Slave .

Filming in Dunedin for The Light Between Oceans is expected to finish in about a week.
