Preperations are well under way for the annual Mosgiel Community Foodbank Drive.

The event, which has been run annually for the past 10 years, involves police, fire and ambulance staff, Lions members and more than 100 volunteers picking up boxes and bags of groceries from outside the front of houses.

Co-ordinator Michelle Kerr said the annual drive helps stock the foodbank's shelves in time for Christmas - its busiest time of the year.

''The generosity of the community is overwhelming. The hall is chocker afterwards. We have lots and lots of struggling families ... not necessarily the ones on benefits.

"The rising costs of everyday living is affecting everybody and we never know when it will affect us. Circumstances change,'' she said.

On average, 56 food parcels are given to those in need every month.

Each food parcel is made up to include everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to cleaning products.

People are allowed three food parcels a year.

''We do not ask any questions about people who come in to get a food parcel.

"There [are] a lot of new clients, which is showing us there is a greater need out there. They get a great across-the-board selection of food. We are here to help those that are stuck,'' she said.

Mrs Kerr said without the assistance of the community, the foodbank would not be as successful as it is.

''People put their hands in their pockets on a regular basis and give. Our community is amazing. We are so lucky,'' she said.
