An armed offenders squad call-out last night closed Brighton Rd at Ocean View, after police responded to ''threats made'' by a 53-year-old man.

Armed officers turned back traffic at roadblocks during the incident, which took about three hours to resolve.

Police were giving little information late last night, but a neighbour told the Otago Daily Times the man had turned on the gas and was threatening to blow up his house.

The callout came just before 6.30pm.

Roadblocks were in place at the corner of Brighton and Rock View Rds to the north, and Brighton and Creamery Rds to the south.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of the Police Southern District Command Centre, said the man was the occupant of the house involved.

Sen Sgt Brown could not comment on the neighbour's claims, but said the Fire Service was called as a precaution.

The man was arrested about 9.30pm, and neither he nor any officers were injured.

No shots were fired.

The man was taken to Dunedin Hospital for assessment, and was likely to face charges over the incident.

A neighbour who lived one house away from where the incident took place, and declined to be named, said the man had turned on the gas and was threatening to blow up his house.

She heard AOS members shouting at a man to ''turn off the gas''.

''I didn't hear what he was saying. I only heard the police.''

It was ''pretty scary'' while the incident was happening.

The woman said she would have preferred it if police had told her what was happening.

''I didn't actually know what was going on.
