Driver still affected

A Dunedin man was processed for drink-driving yesterday morning, despite not having had a drink since the previous night.

The 60-year-old Dunedin man was stopped at checkpoint on South Rd, Dunedin about 10.45am.

He recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 389mcg.

The man told police he had been drinking the previous night.

He was issued with a $200 fine and 50 demerit points, Sergeant Steve Aitken said.

''This goes to show the effects of alcohol still can be present in your body many hours later, even after sleeping.''

Last week, police told the Otago Daily Times there had been a noticeable decrease in the number of drink-drivers apprehended since the new legislation came into force on December 1.

The new legal breath-alcohol limit is 250mcg for people aged over 20, which was cut from 400mcg.

The alcohol limit for those under 20 is zero.
