Driver takes tourist's keys

A member of the public stopped a tourist driving a rental car on the Lindis Pass and took the vehicle's keys, after narrowly avoiding a head-on collision.

Southern District Command Centre district deployment co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Daryl Lenane said the incident happened about 8pm yesterday and ended with the tourist, of Indian descent, having his rental car contract torn up.

The man's actions came after he believed the tourist's driving nearly resulted in a head-on crash.

''That driver actually stopped them near the top of the Lindis Pass and took the keys off them.''

The family in the rental car were taken to Tarras in a shuttle-bus.

The driver later made a complaint to police about the tourist's driving and the rental company agreed to terminate their contract.

Snr Sgt Lenane did not recommend others take the law into their own hands.

"Unless it's an exceptional circumstance it's not something that we would recommend.

"There is probably some potential implications around that.''
