Drizzle on way - but no significant rainfall

Dunedin's sunny, dry weather is about to give way to drizzly, humid weather, but not the ''significant'' rainfall farmers are hoping for, the MetService says.

A northeasterly weather pattern will develop during the next few days, bringing more cloud and drizzle to coastal areas from tomorrow, MetService forecaster John Law said.

''With the patchy on-shore feed of air, it'll feel humid and damp.''

Inland, the sun would continue to shine, except for an occasional afternoon shower.

The northeasterly's arrival was preceeded by a ''big contrast'' in the city's temperatures yesterday.

The Octagon station recorded an easterly wind and 24degC, while at the airport on the Taieri a norwester and 33degC were recorded.

The change in weather would mean that as well as the cloud and drizzle, temperatures would only reach the low 20s ''at best'', he said.

The drizzle would not bring the ''huge amounts'' of rainfall people were hoping for.

While it was too early to say for certain what the weather had in store for the end of the week, computer modelling suggested more light rain and clouds could be coming.

''On the horizon, a developing area of low pressure over the Tasman Sea is set to bring some much-needed rainfall to parts of New Zealand towards the end of the week.''
