A Dunedin film fan tweeted her way on to the red carpet at the Baftas.

Meet Caitlin Owen.

The 22-year-old student set her alarm just to watch coverage of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts film awards early on Monday morning.

And while she wasn't at the annual London award ceremony in person, she still made an appearance despite being in Dunedin - 19,100km away.

The awards ceremony asked for questions to the stars via Twitter and so she tweeted a question to Eddie Redmayne, who played Prof Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

Tweeting ''What was the hardest part of capturing the progression of Stephen Hawking's motor neurone disease?'' she then watched as the actor answered her question.

''It was really cool,'' she said.

A self-confessed fan of the film, she was pleased Redmayne won the award for best actor, Redmayne later dedicating his win to Prof Hawking.

Another tweet was directed at Redmayne's co-star, Felicity Jones, and, while she was not asked the question, the tweet appeared behind the actress during the live television broadcast.

''It was quite an amazing experience ... especially as I had just woken up.''
