Free study at Otago Polytech

Otago Polytechnic is offering free level 2 study as part of a Government push to increase the number of people with level 2 qualifications.

At present, 80.3% of Otago residents leave school with a level 2 qualification, and 74.2% nationwide.

Holding a level 2 qualification is seen as critical, as it opens many pathways to further tertiary study, Otago Polytechnic school of social services head Chris Williamson says.

''Free fees provides a zero risk opportunity for people to step back into education,'' he said.

''It enables students to kick start their education without adding a financial burden. No matter what your previous experiences have been, zero fees open the door to gaining new qualifications and future employment.''

The scheme, funded by New Zealand's Tertiary Education Commission, gave New Zealand citizens and permanent residents the opportunity to study approved programmes without paying tuition fees.

Students were eligible if they did not already hold a level 2 or higher qualification.

Otago Polytechnic offers two level 2 qualifications: the certificate in foundation studies and the certificate in animal care.

The foundation studies certificate provided students with a base for further study or employment and taught practical skills for a particular trade or profession.

The national certificate in animal care provided a foundation qualification for those seeking a career working with animals.

All students would be supported in their learning, Mr Williamson said.
