A Dunedin dog-lover is calling on other ''lazy'' owners to do the right thing and clean up after their pets.

Adele Johnston said the amount of dog faeces appeared to be increasing on John Wilson Ocean Dr and surrounding areas.

She regularly walked her dog in the area, and had noticed more faeces as more owners turned a blind eye to their dogs' business.

''It's bad, actually,'' she said.

''Fair enough if they're going down the bank, and you can't get down there, or in a bush, but right in view ...

''I've seen it on the road and even on the grass verge.''

The council had recently stopped restocking a bag dispenser in the area, as a cost-saving measure, and instead encouraged owners to bring their own plastic bags and leave behind those they didn't use.

Miss Johnston said she was happy to pick up after her dog Harley, using plastic supermarket bags, but others were too ''lazy'' to make use of those left behind.

She worried the council could eventually ban dogs from the area, if problems persisted.

''Because of people just being lazy and not picking up after their dogs, it could actually come to that.''

Her comments came after the council confirmed it had stopped restocking dog fouling plastic bag dispensers, as a cost-cutting measure, several months ago.

Instead, the council wanted to encourage pet owners to bring their own bags, and recycle those they did not use by leaving them in the bag dispensers.

Dunedin City Council animal control team leader Ros MacGill was not aware of increasing problems with dog fouling at John Wilson Ocean Dr, and said there were no plans to ban dogs from the area.

Public complaints about dog fouling appeared to be holding steady at between 38 and 59 per year since July 2010.
