Amenity service recognised

The group behind a Waitati community walkway won the joint top prize at the annual Keep Dunedin Beautiful beautification awards yesterday.

The Blueskin Youth and Amenity Society won the joint top prize for constructing the walkway, along with Caversham Community Group for various events it held.

Keep Dunedin Beautiful co-ordinator Darlene Thomson said the awards were an opportunity to recognise groups and individuals who had contributed to keeping the city beautiful.

''Each year, those who attend comment on the fact that they never knew so many people worked behind the scenes doing their bit to keep our city beautiful,'' she said.

The top four winners received prize money of between $50 and $100.

Other winners included: Sawyers Bay School, 2nd, for building a plastic bottle hothouse and multiple cleanups; Dive Otago, 3rd, for Project Aware Dive Against Debris; Our Seas Our Future, outstanding service, for inspiring others to care for the environment.
