While organisers are usually pretty cloak-and-dagger about the show's content, chairman Howard Brockie has let slip a few details about this year's production, saying the directors were attempting to modernise it to suit younger tastes.
It would include hits by stars such as Lady Gaga and the Madden Brothers.
The show, which will be staged at Dunedin's Mayfair Theatre from July 7-11, will have a cast of 79, accompanied by a 14-piece orchestra.
Sunday's workshop was focused on casting people for the show's various roles.
Mr Brockie said the next weekend workshop would be held in late June and it would be one of the show's main dress rehearsals.
