The ''dribbling'' on the large mural on two walls of the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross in Rattray St is a mark of the artist's style, Dunedin Street Art spokesman Glen Hazelton says.

Dr Hazelton said the Australian street artist, Fintan Magee, who painted the children catching clouds with nets was similar to others he had painted around the world.

The style gave the mural - entitled Catching Clouds - a sense of movement, Dr Hazelton said.

''He paints it properly first and then he does a real watered down wash of the same colour and lets it dribble, so they are supposed to look like that.''

Dr Hazelton had reassured people the paint of the mural had not run and the mural looked as the artist had intended.

''It's not running . . . and it wasn't raining while he was up there. I've had all sorts of theories.''
