Otago Racing Club president Dean Lawrence leans on the new plastic running rail which was installed at Wingatui last week.

The rail, which cost about $130,000 to produce and install, was funded by the club, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and the Racing Safety Development Fund maintained by the New Zealand Racing Board.

The rail brings the track's infrastructure up to the highest standards, alongside premier tracks such as Ellerslie.

The plastic running rail is designed to break away and collapse when a horse and rider fall into it.

The old aluminium rail and steel posts have been moved to the sand track on the inside of the course proper.
