The fundraising deadline for a massive mural on a South Dunedin rope factory is hanging by a thread.

Malcam Trust youth worker and project co-ordinator Michela Carrington said the fundraising target of $3500 would pay artist fees and buy supplies for 50 young people to paint a mural on 67m of Donaghy's wall at Bathgate Park.

Miss Carrington (32), of Dunedin, said they had until the start of Youth Week, May 23, to raise the funds.

''We are committed to making it happen.''

The young people who will create the mural were from King's High School, Pact, Idea Services, Dunedin Training Centre, Dunedin Community College and the Malcam Charitable Trust, Miss Carrington said.

The trust, South Dunedin police and Dunedin artists Aroha Novak, Guy Howard-Smith and James Bellaney were driving the project.

The artists would run a series of workshops introducing the young people to the skills needed for the project.

Miss Carrington said the young people would create their own positive representations reflecting this year's Youth Week theme - ''we are the future''.

The young people would then be supported to overlay the representations on a background mural designed and painted by the artists.

Youth Week runs from May 23 to 31 and painting would begin on May 24.
