'ODT' reporters shine at national media awards

The Otago Daily Times scooped two significant reporter awards at the 2015 Canon Media Awards in Auckland last night.

Vaughan Elder (29) won the science and technology category with his entries about a University of Otago-developed diagnostic device being fast-tracked so it could be used in the fight against Ebola; a Caversham hairdresser's biodegradable alternative to aluminium foils; and an article previewing the final announcement on AgResearch's cuts at its Invermay campus.

Feature writer Shane Gilchrist (46) won the arts and entertainment category with his articles on Elvis Costello (''Still the attraction''), Rod Stewart (''Sailing into Dunedin'') and Tim Finn (''Unclouded memories'').

The Otago Daily Times was a finalist in the Newspaper of the Year (over 30,000 circulation) category.

The overall title was won by The New Zealand Herald.

It was also a big night for another Allied Press publication.

Queenstown's Mountain Scene claimed the Community Newspaper of the Year title with Frank Marvin named community reporter of the year.
