Sergeant Warren Kemp, of Dunedin International Airport police, keeps an eye on motorists as they drive through the intersection of State Highways 1 and 86 at Allanton. Sgt Kemp is concerned about motorists ignoring the stop sign at the intersection....

It is only a matter of time until someone is hurt - or worse, if the stop sign at Allanton is not adhered to, Sergeant Warren Kemp says.

The Dunedin International Airport officer said about 50% of motorists were driving straight through the intersection of State Highways 1 and 86.

''We aren't talking about people coming up and rolling through, we have seen people coming through about 25kmh plus,'' he said.

''One woman come through there and accelerated at about 40kmh to get ahead of two truck and trailers.

''Sooner or later, someone's going to have a big crash.''

It was only one of several anecdotes about the risks people were taking at the intersection.

A patrol car spent about 20 minutes at the intersection earlier this month and in that time six people were issued tickets.

''They are just using it as a give-way,'' Sgt Kemp said.

''Most of the offenders are just being lazy.''

Police would beef up their presence at the intersection and issue more tickets to stamp out the problem, he said.

Sgt Kemp had a message to motorists taking their chances at the intersection.

''It's a stop sign and there's no reason not to stop,'' he said.

''We don't like issuing tickets but we will to enforce it.

''You are only saving yourself a couple of seconds of travel time.''

Increased patrol hours and tickets could be expected if the behaviour did not improve.

''It is a stop sign - so stop.''
