Police weekend watch on speed, drink-driving

Southern police are reminding motorists travelling during the coming long weekend that any speed over the limit can be targeted with a ticket.

Police will be out in force over Queen's Birthday Weekend targeting speeders and drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs, Southern district acting road policing manager Senior Sergeant Steve Larking says.

Anyone caught driving over the speed limit could be ticketed, regardless of how fast they were travelling.

Additional patrols and speed cameras would be deployed across the district to catch those breaking the law, he said.

''We want every driver in Southern to make sure they follow the three key steps when they get behind the wheel - no alcohol, safety belts on, and slow down and drive to the conditions,'' he said.

''Police can do what they can through enforcement, but ultimately you have the power to influence those around you to make good choices.

''If your mate or family member is about to get in a vehicle and drive after drinking alcohol, do the right thing and intervene to make sure they get home alive.''

A high number of vehicles were expected on the road during the holiday weekend and frustration levels could be amplified.

Anyone driving slowly, towing a trailer or who were unfamiliar with the roads should pull to the left when it was safe to do so to allow others to pass, Snr Sgt Larking said.

''It is about making the right decisions this weekend,'' he said.

''It's particularly important down this end of the country after the recent snowfalls across the district.

''While the weekend forecast looks good enough, we still need to drive more slowly and be cautious of frosty mornings and hazards such as black ice.''

Driving tips

• Rest and sleep before travelling to help you remain alert while driving.

• Where possible, use multiple drivers on your journey and swap often.

• Stick to the posted speed limit.

• Be mindful of following distances, as more vehicles are expected on the road.

• Don't drink and drive. Watch your drinking and your family and friends' drinking. If they try to drive after drinking, remind them to be responsible.
