Heavy snow to 500m possible

A severe rain warning for Clutha and Dunedin may culminate in heavy snow falling to 500m in Otago today, a MetService meteorologist says.

The warning predicted ''accumulations may reach 80mm to 100mm about the hills and ranges over an 18-hour period, which is a significant amount of rain for the [Clutha and Dunedin] area''.

The rain was expected to develop early this morning, and clear by Friday, meteorologist Emma Blades said.

Snow was expected above 500m from this afternoon to tomorrow morning.

Throughout Otago, temperatures will fall towards the end of the week, ''but it'll be nothing crazy'', she said.

''Queenstown and Wanaka will probably get down to freezing overnight, as we go towards Friday.''

Overnight lows in Alexandra and Balclutha would also probably reach freezing, she said.

In Dunedin, lows would hover around 3degC.
