The Star's campaign to find the oldest cat in Dunedin has come up trumps this week.

John and Yvonne Benson said their cat Josie was at least 8 weeks old when she was first vaccinated in March 1994, making her about 21 years and five months old.

The Star's previous oldest cat was Bogart, who turned 21 this month.

Mrs Benson said Josie slept on an easy chair with an electric blanket under a towel and a cushion on the floor to help her get on to the chair.

Her eyesight and hearing were not great, she was a bit stiff but had a huge appetite and was affectionate.

''We dread the day something will happen but she can't go on that much longer ... she has been a beautiful animal,'' Mrs Benson said.

Thea Heperi phoned to say she has a three-legged cat named Tiggy, who is about 21.

Norm Dolamore, of Queenstown, emailed to say he has a ginger ''moggie'', who is 22.

If you have a Dunedin cat older than 21 and five months email star@thestar.co.nz or phone 479-3505 extension 8312.
