An arrest warrant has been issued for a former University of Otago student who now acts as the face of Islamic State.

Australian police were granted an arrest warrant for Tareq Kamleh - who lived in Cumberland Hall during 2003 and studied first-year health sciences at Otago - on charges of being a member of a terrorist organisation, recruiting for a terrorist organisation and being in a declared area, likely the IS stronghold of Raqqa, the Guardian reported.

The former South Australian paediatric registrar, who assumed the name Abu Yousef al-Australie, left Australia for Syria and appeared in propaganda videos for the terrorist group calling on medical professionals to join the cause.

He has maintained his presence on social media since leaving Australia earlier this year.

Fellow students at the University of Otago said the ''really popular'' student was known as Tex.

He was part of the university's drinking scene and was popular with women, they said.

He failed to gain entry into the university's medical degree programme and returned to Australia.

He completed his medical degree at Adelaide University, before working as a paediatric registrar at the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital until 2013.

The Daily Mail reported Kamleh won an award among interns at Royal Adelaide Hospital for being the most promiscuous intern in 2011.

Kamleh has taken to social media to deny the claims of womanising and boozing.

''I have never taken part in unprofessional conduct which would have jeopardised my doctor-patient relationship,'' he said.

''I made a very well-educated and calculated decision to come here. It did not involve any brainwashing.''

He distanced himself from fighting in the area where he is now based and said the actions of IS militants were ''between them and God''.

The warrant for Kamleh's arrest means he will be arrested immediately if he returns to Australia.
