Highlanders fan gear has been flying off the shelves in sports stores across Dunedin.

Otago Sports Depot owner Brent Davies said interest had been much higher than usual in the build-up to Saturday's Super Rugby final against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

His shop was subsequently out of stock, he said.

''We had one home jersey left on Monday.

''We could at least sell 20 more this week ... if I had more.''

Champions store manager Matt Clifford said the shop had been really busy since before the Highlanders played the Chiefs in the first match of the playoffs two weeks ago.

''It would be like a normal home game week,'' Mr Clifford said.

''We're selling just as much as if a game was in Dunedin.

''It's quite surprising how many people are going to the game.''

Champions was selling mostly jerseys but some polo shirts, flags and ''anything blue and gold''.

At Stirling Sports, store supervisor Chris Scott said staff could not keep up with the demand.

He ordered 30 jerseys last Friday and had one left yesterday.

''We have 36 medium jerseys on their way,'' he said.

Rebel Sport could not be reached for comment.
