Physio pool fundraising enters new phase

The physio pool fundraising campaign is moving into a different phase, as it can start to tentatively plan a long-term future, Otago Therapeutic Pool Trust secretary-treasurer Neville Martin says.

The campaign has raised more than $880,000. The trust had a fundraising target it had to meet by June 30, which had been achieved.

But the tally was still a long way from the target of $1.5million and fundraising needed to continue, Mr Martin said,''We're significantly far on with the fundraising to get the confidence of the Southern District Health Board that we can remain open.

''This has given the trust the confidence that it can now work through the detail with the SDHB on the eventual handover of control and responsibility.''

It was hoped the repair and refurbishment work on the pool could start early next year.

''The public have made an excellent effort so far,'' Mr Martin said.

''The trust is still awaiting news about a few grants and the application for a grant from Lotteries is in progress.''

There had also been an increase in swimmers in the past year, partly because of awareness of its funding plight, he said.

Marketing consultant Philippa Crick, who is helping with the campaign, said the number of those aqua jogging had more than doubled recently.

A fundraising dance at Forbury Park last month had boosted coffers by about $20,000, with the final amount to be confirmed.

The next fundraising event was a casino night on August 8.

Tickets were available by contacting the pool or going to its website.
