The first slab of pre-cast concrete was hoisted into place at Lion-owned Emerson's Brewery in Dunedin yesterday, as part of development worth more than $28 million.

Pictured below, on a container, is brewer Richard Emerson, whose father began the multi-award-winning craft brewery more than 23 years ago.

Preparations began earlier this year at the Anzac Ave site.

Construction is set to continue through winter and the opening is scheduled for mid-2016.

The brewery will move from its neighbouring Wickliffe St site next year.

While the new brewery will be able to make up to 4 million litres of beer annually, initial plans are for 1 million litres a year.

Most of the 20 staff at the new brewery will be working in the hospitality side.

A brewery restaurant is included in the plans.
