Storylines festival at library

Emily Bendall (10), of Dunedin, (above) works on her zine A City Girl's Life at a workshop as part of the Storylines festival at the Dunedin Public Library on Saturday.

Artist Spencer Hall hosted the workshop. He said he started making zines as a child, and never stopped.

''I think there was a project making a newspaper when I was, like, 9,'' he said. ''And since then, I've just been busting them out like crazy.''

He has hosted dozens of workshops and made heaps of zines himself over the years.

His workshops are for children and adults, he said, but he usually preferred the zines children made.

''I find the kids are more into storytelling. And ... I find [their ideas] more interesting,'' he said.

''Adults are more reserved and inclined to take away the idea and format and mull over it more, as opposed to just smash into it and bust out something cool.''

Anyone interested in zines should go to the annual Zinefest fair on Halloween, he said, at a location yet to be decided.
