Dangerous Mosgiel footpath to be fixed

A dangerous section of Mosgiel footpath will be repaired this week, the Dunedin City Council says.

Council roading maintenance engineer Peter Standring spoke at the Mosgiel Taieri Community Board meeting last week, addressing the concerns of Mosgiel resident Alistair Finnie.

Mr Finnie told the board in May about the unsafe section of footpath in Berwick St.

A developer had subdivided a property in the street in late 2013 and heavy traffic serving the subdivision ''destroyed'' a section of the footpath, Mr Finnie said.

The footpath had been ''hijacked'' by the developer, he said.

Elderly residents using walking frames could injure themselves when walking over the damaged section of path.

''If they get on unstable ground they are at risk of falling,'' Mr Finnie said. He had been in ''dialogue'' with the council about the condition of the path since last September but it had been in vain, Mr Finnie said.

At the board meeting last week, Mr Standring said the council could not pressure the developer to finish the construction work but there was an obligation to keep the footpath safe.

The community board's deputy chairman, Mark Willis, said as there were several developments in Mosgiel, the problem would be ongoing.

''It is an area with a lot of elderly people, and it would be a concern if there were rocks and stones there, which are very dangerous.''

The council needed to have someone regularly monitoring construction sites in Mosgiel for safety issues, he said.

Mr Standring assured the board the sites would be monitored more closely.

Board member Sarah Nitis said some footpaths were in such a poor condition some mobility scooter users were travelling on the road to avoid the footpaths.

Chairman Bill Feather said the board was not concerned about how long the development was taking to complete but wanted the footpath maintained to an acceptable level for the duration of the development.

After the meeting last week, Mr Standring talked to the Berwick St developer, who told him the footpath would be repaired this week.
