A gap in the Filleul St streetscape is all that remains of the old McIver and Veitch building after it was demolished last week.
Formerly a motorcycle dealership but vacant in recent years, the property will become a 33-space car park.
Its owner, West Cork Ltd, which bought it for $630,000 last year, intends to build a new apartment building on the site.
The demolition and conversion to car parking was non-notified, with the consent having been granted in July.
As part of the consent the car park must have a continuous facade of landscape planting - apart from the 6m entranceway - separating it from the footpath, and its owners must apply for consent for the planned apartment building within five years.
