'Marvellous' opening weekend for new hotel

The opening weekend of the The Distinction Dunedin Hotel was a success, the owner says.

Geoffrey Thomson said staff and contractors had been ''rushed'' getting the 45 rooms booked in the former chief post office building in Liverpool St ready for guests.

Every tight deadline set had been met by contractors and staff, Mr Thomson said.

The feedback from everyone had been positive, he added.

''We had very happy customers and very happy staff ... it was just marvellous.''

The hotel would be officially opened after its other 76 rooms and car park were constructed.

''It's going to be a wee way off.''

The car park would start ''taking shape'' in the next two weeks, with steel work going up and concrete being poured, he said.
