A loyal customer was the first to walk down the aisles of a ''wonderful'' new Dunedin supermarket yesterday.

Maureen Milburn, of Green Island, said she had been shopping at supermarkets owned by the Moyle family for nearly 40 years.

She was the first customer to enter the Green Island supermarket yesterday.

''It was a real privilege - a real special moment,'' Mrs Milburn said.

The supermarket was ''absolutely wonderful'', she said.

Fresh Choice Green Island owner John Moyle said the opening yesterday went well.

It was good to finally be open, he said.

''It was a good turnout and we had good weather.''

Mr Moyle's father, Lyndsay, opened the first grocery store in Green Island in 1952.

The family opened a large supermarket on a new site in Main South Rd, Green Island, under the A-1 brand in 1977.

The supermarket was renovated and rebranded Moyle's Supervalue Green Island in 1998.

Mr Moyle bought out his parents in the early 2000s.

The new supermarket, on the other side of Main South Rd, had a butchery section twice the size of the previous store and a frozen food section triple the size.

The new supermarket employed 56 staff, Mr Moyle said.
