No 'bitch' in new policy

The word bitch is out of season at the Dunedin City Council.

All mentions of the word were removed by council staff from the proposed draft dog control policy and bylaw, which councillors voted on yesterday.

The section entitled "Bitches in Season'' was changed to "Female dogs in Season'' and later mentions of the word in the section - about keeping female dogs confined when they are on heat - were also removed.

Cr David Benson-Pope did not have an issue with the suggested change and did not believe the council was ‘‘overpowered with a wave of political correctness''.

"I've got no view on it and I don't mind either way,'' Cr Benson-Pope said.

Council animal control team leader Ros MacGill said the change was made on the advice of a council lawyer, with the intention of "avoiding'' the double-meaning of the word.

She did not think it was a case of political correctness.
