New chief medical officer appointed

Canterbury District Health Board's chief medical officer has been appointed to the top medical role at the beleaguered Southern District Health Board.

Dr Nigel Millar's appointment as chief medical officer was announced to staff by chief executive Carole Heatly yesterday.

The role has not had a permanent incumbent for about six months.

Dr Millar will take up the position next year, but the start date was yet to be confirmed.

In the announcement email released by the health board, Ms Heatly told staff the board was "embarking on an exciting phase of our transformation''.

Dr Millar is also a physician, specialising in geriatric and general medicine.

He trained in England at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.

He has been CMO at Canterbury for more than 10 years.
