Richard Reid has celebrated his birthday the same way for the past three years.

He goes to Best Cafe in lower Stuart St, Dunedin, orders oysters, and sits down for a meal.

Mr Reid yesterday celebrated his latest birthday, his 103rd, three days early.

He was at the restaurant with staff from Oxford Court Lifecare, where he lives in the Reid unit.

The unit was named after him, unit care manager Theresa Stevens said.

‘‘We're very privileged to have Richard living with us. He is the unit.''

She said Mr Reid used to go to Best Cafe quite a bit when he was younger.

Mr Reid, who was born on December 21, 1912, worked as a bookie.
