A Dunedin squash club continues to be targeted by thieves.

Senior Constable Ed Calder, of Dunedin, said a burglary took place at Pirates Squash Club in John Wilson Ocean Dr in St Kilda on Friday night.

A glass panel was smashed to open a door. The security glass in two internal doors was smashed to enter the bar and an empty cash register was taken.

The register was recovered from the adjacent sports ground. Nobody linked to burglary had been located, he said.

In October, thieves stole car keys from a changing room at the club and stole a car and then returned the next night to steal cash and alcohol.

Snr Const Calder did not believe the thefts at the club were linked.

Club president Matt Morton said the club had been illegally entered five times since late October.

‘‘It's costing us a huge amount every time because the excess for our insurance is $1000 and we don't have endless amounts of cash ... This is really crippling us.''

The thefts were frustrating and were ‘‘killing'' the family-oriented club from growing its membership.

No money was held at the club, he said.
