Name: Katherine Graham
Job title: Lifeguard, St Clair Salt Water Pool

Q How long have you been on the job?

A Coming up to three years. This is my third season at the salt water pool

Q Describe a normal day at work.

A Normally there are two lifeguards who rotate between reception and poolside lifeguarding every half-hour.

We have certain times allocated throughout the day for cleaning which allows us to keep everything nice and tidy. It makes the day flow well.

Q What are the high points of the job?

A Definitely the people. We have the most amazing regulars who really appreciate having the pool open, which makes our work even more enjoyable.

Everyone who works and swims here loves it. The location in general is also one of the biggest highlights: you can't beat that view!

We see some amazing wildlife, the occasional sea lion, and some of us were lucky enough to spot an orca a few weeks ago.

Q What are the low points of the job?

A Only really heavy rain and wind, but the pool is heated so cold weather doesn't have too much of an impact.

Q Do you normally work through the summer holidays and if so, why?

A I've always worked through the summer holidays. It's the perfect way to work and save money in between semesters.

Q Do you get paid more?

A Only on public holidays.

Q If you were on holiday, where would you be and what would you be doing?

A In Twizel with my family enjoying the sun or travelling overseas.

Q Does it annoy you that you're at work while everyone else is on holiday?

A It's never really bothered me. It's such a beautiful place to work. We spend most of our time outdoors. I never feel like I'm missing out on all the sunshine.

Q Are you able to bunk off more easily during the holiday period?

A Not at all. This is a very busy season for us, and we've had record numbers already since we opened in October.

It keeps us incredibly busy and we all work hard every day to keep the pool up to a high standard for the many people using the pool throughout the week.
