The noise of hammering tradesmen will become the "hammer of the gods'' after the revamp of a Dunedin school.

Logan Park High School deputy principal Peter Hills said the school was getting a "remodel and revamp'' worth nearly $1 million.

A new creative suite was a "centrepiece'' of the build.

In the first term, the purpose-built suite - with two performance rooms, four practice rooms and a recording studio - would open to budding musicians.

As tradesmen worked in the suite yesterday, Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song boomed out on a portable stereo.

Singer Robert Plant wailed about "a land of ice and snow and the hammer of the gods'', the hard rock powerhouse conditioning the new soundproof walls.

Last year, the school's musicians were spread across several "tiny'' music rooms, Mr Hills said.

The build began in early December and was across nearly every part of the school, he said.

Everything was on song for the pupils' return on Monday, he said.

The suite was being built in the old library space, as a new library was being built where the original library was when the school opened in 1975.

The gym renovation was nearly finished.

Music teacher Hana Fahy said she was looking forward to the suite opening.

The school's scores of musicians would benefit greatly from the suite, especially the recording studio.

"We have a lot more space to rehearse and practise.''

Keith Mitchell Builder apprentice and former Logan Park pupil David Liddell was installing drywall in a ceiling at the school yesterday.

The tradesmen were working to a tight schedule, Mr Liddell said.

"The build is going good,'' he said, rushing to a building inspection yesterday.
