The number of cancellations of meals on wheels is four times as high as the Southern District Health Board has previously acknowledged.

Information provided to the Otago Daily Times this afternoon shows 44 people have cancelled in the past two weeks - not 11 as the board previously said.

In a statement the board said the discrepancy was because it only counted the cancellations made directly to Compass Group, and did not count the cancellations handled by meals on wheels co-ordinators.

Of the cancellations, 43 were in Dunedin. In Dunedin and Invercargill, there are 250 recipients.

The board's statement said its specially convened meeting with senior Compass staff today in Dunedin was "productive''.
