A show by some of China's top acrobats and theatre performers is expected to be a highlight of Chinese New Year celebrations in Dunedin tonight.

As the Year of the Monkey begins, festivities to mark the occasion get under way at the Dunedin Chinese Garden at 7pm.

Included in the evening's events is a show by the Yunnan Art Troupe, which has been highly praised by both domestic and international audiences for its energetic and elegant performances.

The troupe would provide a range of entertainment, including acrobatics, Kumming folk song and dance theatre performances, music and magic tricks, Dunedin City Council community events co-ordinator Marilyn Anderson said

"This group has been constantly performing ad updating itself, establishing its unique artistic style, inspired by the colourful cultures and arts of the 25 ethnic minorities of the Yunnan Province," Ms Anderson said.

She expected the troupe to draw more visitors to this year's celebration.

Two years ago, about 5000 people attended, but up to 8000 might come to tonight's event, she said.

The entertainment will also include fireworks, food stalls and a dancing dragon.

The parade will leave from the Octagon at 7.15pm, heading south to the Exchange, where it will turn left into lower Rattray Street towards the Garden.

The fireworks finale will start at 10pm, behind the Garden.
