Education leaders coming to Dunedin

About 150 delegates from education sectors around the world are expected to attend the International Educational Leadership Conference in Dunedin next month.

The two-yearly conference will be hosted by the New Zealand Educational Administration and Leadership Society (NZEALS) on April 20-22.

Conference convener and University of Otago Centre for Educational Leadership and Administration Assoc Prof Ross Notman said keynote speakers would include Mai Chen, of ChenPalmer Lawyers in Auckland, Dr Chris Sarra, a Queensland indigenous educator, and Prof Bruce Barnett, the American co-director of a 10-country international research project on social justice and high-needs schools.

‘‘We're delighted to be able to attract such a high calibre of speaker who will appeal to a wide audience.

‘‘It fits well with NZEALS' aim of promoting quality leadership for learning across early childhood, schools and tertiary education.''

Prof Notman said the international conference was last held in Dunedin in 2004.

‘‘It's a great opportunity for the region's teachers and leaders to attend an international event locally, with informed keynote speakers and presentations that are relevant to today's leaders in education.''

Presentation sessions would focus on leadership for success, social justice and leading high-needs schools, he said.

NZEALS represents the entire educational spectrum, from early childhood to tertiary level, as well as agencies such as the Education Review Office and the Ministry of Education.

It is an affiliated member of the Commonwealth Council of Educational Administration Management, which links New Zealand to more than 20 educational leadership organisations around the world.
