Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke and Major Tom will rise again - in Dunedin no less - despite it being nearly three months since David Bowie died.

Dunedin Bowie fans Heidi Hayward and husband Greg MacLeod have been working to create a Dunedin tribute to the glam rock star on April 15.

Local bands and guests will perform Bowie hits in an R18 gig at Sammy's.

Dunedin's glam rock star, the late Dr Glam, will also make a one-off reappearance.

Ms Hayward and Mr MacLeod, both closely involved in Dunedin's music scene, said they were huge fans of Bowie's work ‘‘and we felt we needed an opportunity to celebrate the life and works of the great man''.

‘‘This really is a labour of love for us. We just couldn't let such a bright star pass with no farewell.''

And so, the tribute, titled Planet Earth is Blue, was born.

Ms Hayward said Dunedin's performing arts community had embraced the opportunity to perform at ‘‘the wake'', with Sammy's owner, Sam Chin, providing the venue free of charge.

Local bands The Oxo Cubans, Greg MacLeod and the Little Cabaret Band, Catgut and Steel, Del Girl and other guests will be part of the event.

‘‘We've gathered Dunedin's very best musicians so we can give him a true southern hemisphere send-off,'' Mr MacLeod said.

Dr Ian Chapman, the man behind Dr Glam's persona, said Bowie was the inspiration behind Dr Glam.

He said he discovered glam rock as a teenager and it went on to form a large part of his teaching tool kit as he lectured at the University of Otago's music department.

He killed off Dr Glam in 2014 because ‘‘he needed to stay true to the transience that defined glam rock''.

‘‘This event, though, it's right that Dr Glam come back to life for this.''

Ms Hayward said any profits would be given to the Otago Community Hospice.
