The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand illustrator Derek Onley, of Waitati, spots birds at Tomahawk Lagoon in Dunedin yesterday, as part of the Wild Dunedin nature festival.

Birds NZ Otago spokeswoman Mary Thompson said nine people - aged between 9 and nearly 90 - used "spotting scopes'' to watch birds at the lagoon for two hours from 10am yesterday.

The 16 species of water birds spotted on the lagoon yesterday included a rare white heron, Mrs Thompson said.

"There's not many places in the country where you can go five minutes from the centre of town and see a white heron or the four main species of native ducks.''

The event was expected to return to the festival next year, she said.
