Columba College has begun work on a multimillion-dollar upgrade of its school grounds.

Two trees outside the school were felled yesterday to make way for the development.

Yvette Williams resident and Columba College old girl Honor McKellar, who has lived at the rest-home for three years, visited the trees before they were cut down to take a final photo.

Ms Mckellar was pleased her favourite elm had not been removed.

‘‘There was one in particular I was wanting to stay and it has.

‘‘It is a feature of the garden and now they are down you really don't miss them.''

She could not remember having seen the trees when she was a pupil, but believed they ‘‘must have'' been there.

‘‘I wasn't conscious of the trees. They must have been very much smaller.''
