Man bitten trying to break up dog fight

A man was bitten on his neck and arm while attempting to break up a dog fight in Dunedin.

Senior Sergeant James Ure, of Dunedin, said police were called to St Kilda after a 45-year-old man was bitten by a dog yesterday.

Dunedin City Council environmental health and animal services manager Ros MacGill said the man was walking a Staffordshire bull terrier on a leash in Hargest Cres.

At the same time, a woman was walking down a path on her property with her unleashed Border collie cross dog.

"There was an altercation between the two dogs.''

The dog fight was on public property, she said.

The man tried to separate the dogs and was bitten on the neck and arm.

"We don't know which dog bit him at this point,'' Ms MacGill said.

The collie sustained a "nasty'' injury and was taken to a vet.

The injured man would be interviewed to determine which dog had bitten him.

"At the end of the day, one of the dogs is off a lead and on a public place. It should be under control ... I'd say there will be some consequences as a result of it but at this stage we are not sure what.''

The woman was walking down the path to fetch a dog lead left for her in her letterbox, she said.

St John spokesman Mark Tregoweth said the man sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital.
