Moana Pool plant supervisor Brent Cunningham holds on to one of the 18 5kg 89W energy efficient LED lights which are replacing 16-year-old 40kg 250W lamps (front) at the pool.

The lights, which illuminate the leisure and spa pools, will be replaced during the next fortnight.

The leisure and spa pools will remain closed while the lights are replaced and other maintenance work is completed.

Mr Cunningham said the previous lights used about a third more power and had been in place for the past 16 years.

The 750,000-litre pool was emptied on Sunday and would reopen to the public on May 16, he said.

The pool had to be drained to access the lights above it.

The lights were being replaced because they were dimming and had become a health and safety hazard.

Their replacements had a life of 80,000 hours, Mr Cunningham said.
