Otago Hockey and King's High School asked the Dunedin City Council for $600,000 to develop a "multipurpose all-weather facility'' during yesterday's annual plan hearings.
The hockey turf would have lights and stands and be based at King's High School, Otago Hockey's proposal said.
Otago Hockey general manager Rachel Minton-Smith said the council's agreement to pay for a third of the cost would allow the group and the school to secure funding.
"What we are looking at is a third, a third, a third [between the organisations],'' she said.
"We are hoping to cover the majority of the operating expenditures and upkeep.''
Under the proposal, the council would contribute $500,000 to building the facility and then $10,000 per year for the next 10 years to subsidise upkeep.
The facility would provide a third turf to the city, which would allow it to host school tournaments, she said.
King's High School principal Dan Reddiex said other schools and organisations were widely supportive of the proposal.
"The plan for us is to make it a community facility,'' he said.
