More than 300 people swarmed into the Otago Museum at the weekend to take part in community lantern-making workshops to prepare for Dunedin's upcoming Midwinter Carnival.

Workshop volunteer co-ordinator Andrew Wills said the workshops at the museum had proved popular again this year.

They had run from 10am to 4pm both days and 90 lanterns were made yesterday.

The rocket motif had been selected for the lantern design this weekend because of the latest carnival's "Other Worlds'' theme.

Youngsters up to age 13 and adults who wanted to make their own lanterns to carry in the carnival procession were among the latest participants.

The event had been very successful and most people were "very satisfied'' with their creations, Mr Wills said.

The Midwinter Carnival will be held in and near the Octagon on the evening of June 18, and lantern-making workshops will continue this weekend at the Ocean Beach Scout Hall, Victoria Rd, St Clair, also from 10am to 4pm, on Saturday and Sunday.
