DHBs still lacking asset management

The Auditor-general has expressed concern about a lack of progress in improving asset management at district health boards.

In a report released this week, Lyn Provost said the sector was focused on short-term results, and little had changed since a 2009 report recommended improvement.

"I am concerned that DHB asset management does not seem to have gained much traction in this time.''

Reporting on asset performance was "generally weak'', and DHBs generally did not systematically collect asset information such as age and condition, particularly for clinical equipment.

"To plan and manage their investments ... DHBs need to anticipate wider societal and technological changes,'' Ms Provost said.

More than half of the DHBs did not regularly reconcile the information held in their asset management and financial information systems, the report said.
