Arrest after Octagon assault

Dunedin police have charged a 40-year-old man with assault after another man was left bleeding from the face in the Octagon this morning.

The injured 45-year-old man was found near Alibi Bar and Restaurant about 9.20am and was transported to Dunedin Hospital by police.

The injured man was believed to have been punched in the face, a police media spokeswoman said.

Police faced a short hunt for the man wanted in connection with the assault, she said.

"By the looks of things they [police] pretty much knew who it [the attacker] was to start with,'' the spokeswoman said.

It is understood the two men were known to each other.

The accused would appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date.
